CONTROL PANEL
The control panel has all of the functions of the machine available at you fingertips. The digital controller for setting the thickness, the load meters for monitoring your cutter heads, main start and stop buttons, emergency stop button, and overload and interlock detection system. The control panel is conveniently mounted on a swivel arm that can be moved to the most convenient operators position.
SLIDE OUT CUTTER HEAD
The slide out cutter head makes give easy access to the bottom cutter head and makes blade changing easy and safe. Our slide out cutter heads have a locking device so that the cutter head will remain still while your are changing the knives. Simply unlock and rotate the cutter head towork on the next side.
Our removable cutter head slide out works is precision machined and fitted to close tolerances. Notice that when you remove our cutter head it does not require a tray to hold the cutter head when you slide out the cutter head because of our precision machining and engineering. Many other companies require a tray to hold the cutter head because of their very loose tolerances.
HP x RPM STEALTH, VECTOR, MACH = FINISH
The New Pro Series double sided planers can achieve a superior finish at high feed speeds and are equipped with the horsepower to do it. Our Pro Series comes standard with up to 65 FPM feed speeds.
To achieve the same famous finish we have equipped the machine with a 6 row helical cutter head. To power these cutter heads we have equipped the EP-224 with 20-25 HP top and 15-20 HP bottom, and the EP-216 with 15 HP top (opt 20 HP) and 10 HP bottom. The drive system uses 3 belts for positive transmission of power. And to top it off cutter heads are a high speed 6000 RPM. This allows for more efficient use of the cutter head and allows for each cut to take a smaller bite, thus not using as much horsepower per cut. Most other planer manufacturers cannot stand these higher speeds. They use 4200 RPM cutter heads. Our 6000 rpm cutter head will make 40% more cuts per minute than the competition. This means that the cutter head will be taking smaller bites and run cooler and thus requiring less horse power so you can achieve a better finish at faster feed speeds. All of this engineering effort means you will get a top performing machine that will produce a superior finish.
Our competitors machines will have to increase their HP by 30-40% to equal the moulder speed cutter heads that are standard on the double sided planers. Our machines make 36,000 cuts per minute while many of our competitors machines make only 25,200 cuts per minute. This means that you must either run their machines slower to take smaller cuts or increase their horsepower. Even when you increase their horsepower then you put more stress on their cutters thus causing them to break, chip, or dull quicker. You may even see some of the competition using thicker cutter tips marketing them as being better, however what they won’t tell you is that they must use the thicker cutter tips as a direct result of them having to take bigger bites with their slower rpm cutter heads.
ELEVATION SYSTEM
The elevation system for our Pro Series double side planers is the same as used on our Standard XP. It a male and female precision machines dovetail system. The base for mounting the elevation system is one piece into the main casting of the machine. It is not simply bolt on as in some other manufacturers planers. The bolt on system receives much stress and may cause failure of the system, which can be very costly and time consuming to repair. The one piece mounting system is much stronger and will last many times longer than the bolt on system used by other manufacturers. The dovetail ways are easily adjustable and replaceable for many years of quality service.
All 4 post are synchronized and driven by means of shaft and double chain to insure a accurate elevation setting for the work piece thickness. The elevation system screw jacks are sealed to protect it from contamination from moisture, dust, and dirt. These screws are fine threaded and synchronized for accuracy and smooth operation. This system is powered by a 1/2 HP motor and the table setting can be moved by use of an UP-DOWN push button, automatic digital thickness controller, or manual hand wheel.
The system also has lubrication cups to allow for proper lubrication of all 4 post.
MOTOR STARTING SYSTEM
The main motors utilize an automatic wye-delta soft starting system. This starting system insures that only half the motor load is drawing on your electrical system upon start up. When the motor is then rolling and the load draw has decreased then the full motor power is then available. This system requires less power at start up and will reduce stress that larger motors have on your electrical system. For customers that have only single-phase power and require a phase converter, this system may enable the use of a smaller phase converter. The soft starting system uses reliable Telemecanique components.
DIGITAL PLC THICKNESS CONTROLLER
The thickness setting for the work can be set by the use of our PLC digital thickness controller. This is the easiest means of operation for setting your work piece thickness. If you desire a setting of ¾” you simply enter into the controller .75 and the table will automatically go to the setting you entered.
The calibration feature of the controller is easily performed to ensure the accuracy of the table setting. This feature only takes 5 seconds to set.
Our digital thickness uses an encoder for reading the measurement. This is the same type of system that is used on large CNC routers and panel saws. This is a much more reliable system than other systems that use magnetic sensors and plates.
AUTO THICKNESS DEVICE
The automatic thickness setting device is conveniently located at the left side of the in-feed table. This device can be used in a variety of ways. The most common use for this device is for the operator not to have to use a tape measure to measure the work piece to set the conveyor table. You simply put the work piece at the device, press the table up button and the table setting will stop when the table reaches the proper table setting. The device is adjustable for different settings or for different amounts of stock to be removed from the work piece
DRIVE SYSTEM
The material feeding system power transmission is a reliable chain drive system. This drive system is used to synchronize the power transmission to the upper and lower feed works is one piece chain with automatic slack adjustment. This insures that the feeding will always be positive for the upper and lower feed works. The upper feed works are a carpet finger feed system with rear rollers and the lower feed works are a roller system. Both the upper and lower feed works are powered for maximum material feeding performance.
This drive transmission system is also equipped with an adjustable torque limiting clutch.
This clutch is for the protection of the entire feed works. In the event that a board or foreign object will become stuck in the planer this clutch will slip to help prevent damage to any part of the feed works. This clutch is adjustable to the operators needs. The clutch plates are also easily replaceable in the event they become worn or damaged.
CHROME BED
The entire bed of the machine is precision ground. Then the bed it machine quality hard chrome plated and polished to a mirror finish. This process insures many years of wear resistance to increase the life of the machine.
The extremely smooth surface that remains free of rust and residue also insures smooth operation for the feeding of materials through the planer. The bed chroming process is exactly the same as used on our larger series of machines.
CARPET FINGER FEED SYSTEM
The carpet finger feed system has a large 2 HP motor for heavy-duty performance. The system has infinitely variable feed speed from 20 to 65 feet per minute by means of a heavy-duty Regal variable drive with oil bath gears and bearings. This type of feed system has become very popular because of the ability to plane cupped boards without splitting. If the board
is cupped the carpet fingers will conform to the cupped board and pull the board over the bottom cutter head thus creating a face jointer planed board before proceeding to the top cutter head. This allows for all boards to be planed flat without any damaged caused to the boards by conventional roller feed systems.
Each of the spike fingers is heat treated for maximum wear resistance. Each spiked finger is spring loaded to allow for different thickness, cupped, or odd shaped boards. The spike fingers are randomly arranged to create a pattern that will allow for even the smallest of parts to be planed without danger of getting caught between the finger as on other double sided planers that use a straight row configuration of the finger spikes.
The entire carpet finger feed system has automatic self tensioning to insure that the proper tension is on the feed system. This will automatically adjust the tension to allow for wear and stretch of the feed chain during the years of operation. This also will protect against damage to the feed system due to lack of proper maintenance.
The entire carpet finger feed system can be adjusted up or down simply with one hand lever. This will allow for different pressure to be applied to the work pieces to match the working conditions or the types of wood to be surfaced.
OUTFEED ROLLER FEED SYSTEM
The Titan Series roller feed system takes control of the board after the bottom side of the board has been surfaced. The roller feed works are powered on the top and on the bottom by universal shafts for maximum work piece holding power during the planning operation.
The roller feed system is a heavy duty components. The roller before the top cutter head is a large 4” diameter serrated and sectional feed roller to allow for varying thickness of lumber. The roller after the cutter head is a large 3” diameter smooth surfaced roller to protect against any damage to the finished lumber. The entire upper roller feed system is spring loaded and the pressure can be regulated to allow for varying working conditions. This system works much better and is easier to make adjustments than the simple spring type systems of our competitors. The bottom bed rollers are 3” diameter and the height is adjustable to allow for different working conditions. All bearings for the feed works are oversized and can be lubricated to insure a long service life. This is the same system used on our Standard XP.
CUTTER HEADS
The Totam Series can be equipped with 3 different types of cutter heads. The first is a standard 4 knife cutter head. The second is our most popular Stealth Cutter Head. The Stealth cutter head has 6 rows of cutters and produces a superior quality finish at whisper quiet noise levels. The third is our new Vector series of cutter heads. The Vector series has 6 rows of cutter tips and produces a quality finish much like the Stealth cutter head but is capable of more stock removal while achieving a superior finish. The new Vector cutter head uses heavy duty cutter tips not only on a helical pattern but the cutter tips are on a shear pattern making it a truly unique cutter head that the competition simply can not match. CHIPBREAKER SYSTEM
The Titan Series is equipped with a sectional chip breaker and hold down system. The top cutter head has an adjustable tension sectional chip breaker. The chip breaker is spring loaded and in 2” sections to allow for different thickness of wood. The hold down shoe is heavy plate to insure proper hold down of work piece and to insure a smooth chatter free board. Each section of the chip breaker is independently adjustable and replaceable for easy maintenance and setting.
EASY ACCESS LUBRICATION
The Pro Series lubrication system assist in making sure the machine is easy to maintain.
The lubrication system is for the carpet finger feed system. It is an electronically controlled fully automatic oil lubrication system. This system will continuously apply the proper amount of oil to the carpet finger feed system to insure that the feed works are properly lubricated. The automatic lubricator is adjustable to allow for different working conditions. The system is also equipped with a low oil warning alarm, and an automatic shut down of the machine if the system runs dangerously low of lubrication.
ELECTRICAL CONTROLS
All electrical controls for all double sided planers are standard sized NEMA electrical controls.
This type of electrical controls can be easily found at most electrical supply houses including Grainger.
This allows for low cost maintenance and easy availability of parts. No more waiting on an overpriced contactor from the machines manufacturer that is out of stock and will not be in for 4 weeks.
DUST EXTRACTION
The dust collection system for the model Pro Series double sided planers is a 5” outlet for the top cutter head and one 5” outlet for the bottom cutter head. The bottom outlet is piped to the rear side of the machine. This is a better system than older machines that may have required a pit for the bottom dust
collection piping.
SAFETY FEATURES
All Pro Series double sided planers are equipped with the following safety features:
1. Emergency stops are located at the front and rear of the machine.
2. Across the line 110 volt magnetic controls with re-settable thermal overload protection on all
motors, not just main motor
3. Main cut off and lock out switch.
