MONO BLOCK CONSTRUCTION
All use the mono block construction method including the Excess series. Mono block construction is the best and heaviest duty method for construction and is typically used in larger industrial type machines. Many sander manufacturers use a different type of less expensive construction for their smaller machines. These methods include stick frame construction and formed sheet metal construction, both of which depend on the sheet metal skin to stiffen the structure of the machine. Both of these methods are cheaper to produce and result in a lighter duty, less stable wide belt sander.
Mono block construction is a heavy solid welded or cast base which houses the motors and is the foundation in which the sanding head will rest on. The machine is completely stable before the upper enclosure in installed. This method of construction does not depend on any sheet metal for stability and is superior to all other methods of construction.
ELEVATION SYSTEM
The elevation system for the conveyor feed table utilizes 4 heavy duty 1” screw jacks to produce a strong and reliable elevation system. The screw jacks are double fastened at the top and the bottom for maximum strength and have a removable dust shroud to insure a clean dust free environment. These screws are fine threaded and synchronized for accuracy and smooth operation. This system is powered by a ½ HP motor and the table setting can be moved by use of an UP-DOWN push button, automatic digital thickness controller, or manual hand wheel.
MOTOR STARTING SYSTEM
The main motors utilize an automatic wye-delta soft starting system. This starting system insures that only half the motor load is drawing on your electrical system upon start up. When the motor is then rolling and the load draw has decreased then the full motor power is then
available. This system requires less power at start up and will reduce stress that larger motors have on your electrical system. For customers that have only single-phase power and require a phase converter, this system may enable the use of a smaller phase converter. The soft
starting system uses reliable Telemecanique components.
DIGITAL PLC THICKNESS CONTROLLER
The thickness setting for the work can be set by the use of our dual display digital thickness controller. This is the easiest means of operation for setting your work piece thickness. If you desire a setting of ¾” you simply enter into the controller .750 and the table will automatically go to the setting you entered.
Our controller is also equipped with a jog feature that will allow you to move the table for fine adjustments. If you have made your first pass on the sander at .750 and you desire to take of a minor amount such as 3/1000 you simply press the jog button 3 times and the table will move to .747. This can work for any amount less or more. Just tap the jog button 1 time for each thousandth you want to take off of your work piece.
The calibration feature of the controller is easily performed to ensure the accuracy of the table setting. The calibration feature can also be used to adjust for the thickness differences between different sanding belt grits. This feature only takes 5 seconds to set.
The dual display feature of the controller will show 2 settings of your table. It will always show you the current table setting. It will also show you the new table setting you have entered but at the same time still show you the current table setting. This feature is good if you enter a setting incorrectly and need to know what the current table setting is for correction.
Our digital thickness uses an encoder for reading the measurement. This is a much more reliable system than other systems that use magnetic sensors and plates.
AUTO THICKNESS DEVICE
The automatic thickness setting device is conveniently located at the left side of the in-feed table. This device can be used in a variety of ways. The most common use for this device is for the operator not to have to use a tape measure to measure the work piece to set the conveyor table. You simply put the work piece at the device, press the table up button and the table setting will stop when the table reaches the proper table setting. The device is adjustable for different settings or for different amounts of stock to be removed from the work piece.
AUTO CONVEYOR BELT TRACKING
The pneumatic tracking cylinder automatically tracks the conveyor belt to insure the conveyor belt is centered properly. This system is typically only found on much larger machines. This automatic conveyor belt tracking system is standard equipment on the Excess Series wild belt sanders.
The most common system for tracking conveyor belts is simply a screw adjustment at each side. This common screw type system must be maintained to ensure centering of the conveyor belt, but many times it is not maintained or even noticed that it is out of adjustment until damage is done to an expensive conveyor belt.
SANDING
GROUP
THE FIRST HEAD is a contact drum designed for stock removal with coarser grit sanding belts and can be used for finishing with finer grits. The contact drum is a massive 8” diameter steel drum with a 85 durometer spiral grooved rubber covering.
The rubber covering allows for very good heat dissipation when used for heavy stock removal thus keeping the sanding belt cool. Keeping the sanding belt cool is very important for to increase the sanding belt life, reduce clogging the sanding belt grit, and prevent burning in the
belt and the work piece. The rubber coating also allows for a better finish when using finer grits of sandpaper.
A contact drum that is rubber coated offers a far superior grip of the sanding belt in heavy stock removal applications. Drums that are not rubber coated are prone to have a slippage of the sanding belt the causes a wrinkle of the sanding belt thus the belt is ruined and also the work piece can be damaged.
The contact drum is independently and accurately adjustable in relation to the second head.
This allows you to be able to control the amount of stock removed by the first head. This is controlled by a hand wheel, simply turn the hand wheel clockwise to remove more stock or turn the hand wheel counter clock wise to remove less stock. There is also a indicator to show you
the amount you have moved the contact drum. This action does not change the setting of the table or the second head thus allowing for a wide variety of sanding operations.
THE SECOND HEAD is a combination sanding head that includes both a contact drum and platen. This head can be used in three modes. Drum only, platen only, or drum and platen at the same time.
The 4-3/4” diameter contact drum is 75 shore durometer, rubber coated steel with spiral grooving for exceptional cooling and belt gripping. The drum is dynamically balanced after coating for smooth vibration free performance.
The finish platen is 2-1/2” wide and graphite covered with hard felt backing for superior finishing and scratch removal in finer sandpaper grits. The platen is externally adjustable up and down for different settings by means of adjustment handle. The handle is lockable to insure the desired setting is maintained.
The combination head is equipped with top and rear idler rollers. The steel rollers are dynamically balanced to insure vibration free performance. The diameter of the top idler roller and rear idler roller is and extra large 4”. The belt is tensioned by a pneumatic cylinder with a center fulcrum to apply an even tension laterally across the sanding belts even when the belts are tapered.
CONVEYOR FEED SYSTEM
The conveyor belt feed system has a large 3 HP motor for heavy-duty performance. The system has infinitely variable feed speed from 15 to 50 feet per minute by means of a heavy-duty Regal variable drive with oil bath gears and bearings. The conveyor belt is a heavy duty Goodyear type mat to insure quality slip free performance and long belt life.
STOCK HOLD DOWN ROLLERS
The Excess Series wide belt sander is equipped with double hold down rollers at the front and rear of the combination sanding head. There are also a set of double hold down rollers between the first contact drum sanding head and the second combination sanding head. Double hold down rollers insure a positive hold down of the work piece to the conveyor bed to make sure the work piece is sanded evenly by the sander head.
The 6 hold down rollers are 65 durometer rubber coated steel. Each roller hold down is independently adjustable for proper tension settings. The rollers are also adjustable from left side to right side. Each roller hold down has permanently lubricated sealed ball bearings at each end for long life and trouble free performance.
EASY ACCESS LUBRICATION
All bearings at the combination sanding head are easy access. The grease ports for the bearings are piped to the side for easy access by the user. The grease fittings are located just inside the sanding doors. Just open the door and the fittings are there. No more poor maintenance or wondering where to grease at because you can’t find the fittings or they are too hard to reach.
ELECTRICAL
CONTROLS
All electrical controls for all Extrema wide belt sanders are “Telemecanique” (TE) brand electrical controls, and TE is the owner of the Square D controls company. TE is the most readily available brand of electrical control available in the US. TE electrical controls are very high quality and found from coast to coast at most electrical supply companies. This insures that you will have many years of reliable low cost maintenance on the electrical system. No more waiting on an overpriced contactor from the machines manufacturer that is out of stock and will not be in for 4 weeks.
SANDING BELT
TRACKING SYSTEM
The electronic tracking system for the sanding belt uses reliable off the shelf “Omron” components for reliable performance and easy
availability of parts for years to come. Omron parts are of very high quality and readily available from most electrical supply houses and
WW Grainger. Because our tracking system is made of standard high quality components, your replacement cost will be much less than a special dealer component only available through the sander manufacturer.
The tracking system incorporates photo electric eyes with a send unit and receive unit for more reliable operation with less maintenance. Many other companies use only a send unit with a reflector, which is less reliable and will require for you to keep the reflector clean. A few other companies still use the old air tracking method, which is very unreliable and very susceptible to dust, and moisture contamination.
PNEUMATIC CONTROLS
All of our pneumatic controls are quality “Camozzi” brand components. Camozzi is available
across the USA and around the world from most pneumatic suppliers. Camozzi parts are also
interchangeable with “Aro” components, which is also readily available in the USA.
QUICK RELEASE LOCKING HANDLE
The sanding belt on the both the contact drum and the combination head can be removed quickly by using the quarter turn type locking handle. Simply turn the handle one-quarter turn and remove the handle and the spacer block. Remove the sanding belt and replace with a new belt. Then replace the spacer block and insert handle and turn one quarter to tighten. This makes for very quick replacement of sanding belts.
DUST EXTRACTION
The dust collection system has dual 4” outlets for the XS-1A37 and dual 5” outlets for the XS- 1A43 for each sanding head. This provides for better dust collection by having the suction spread over a larger area and also by keeping the maximum air speed upon entering your dust collection pipe.
BRAKE INDICATOR
The Excess Series is equipped with all of the latest safety features. Most of the time when you experience a problem with a modern machine it is because of a safety on the machine. Our machines have a brake indicator light that will show you that any malfunction is because of a safety interlock on the machine. This makes maintenance and use very simple.
SAFETY FEATURES
All sander are equipped with the latest in safety features as follows:
1. All sanding compartment doors are equipped with Omron interlocks.
2. Emergency stops are located at the front and rear of the machine.
3. Across the line 110 volt magnetic controls with re-settable thermal overload protection on all motors, not just main motor
4. Includes over thickness safety device, which can be set for over thickness of work piece or for safety for operator’s hands. Machine will automatically stop when this device is triggered.
5. Automatic shut down and braking for both sanding heads in the absence of compressed air, overload of motors, over tracking, sanding belt breaking, belt tensioning, over thickness safety device tripping.
6. Amperage gauge for both sanding head motors.
7. Automatic opening of conveyor bed upon any emergency stop or shut down. The conveyor bed will automatically open for the operator’s safety in an emergency situation. In case of an accidental shut down by operator error simply push the start button on the digital controller and the table will move to it original location before the shut down occurred.
8. All electrical and motor access doors are bolted shut to prevent unauthorized entry.
FACTORY TESTING
Every machine is tested at the factory and then re-tested for each customer before the machine is shipped. This insures that the machine is ready to go when the customer receives it.
